OLD TIME PILOT UPGRADEAnd I know that there are pilots out there that are about to upgrade to captain at a major airline that are also younger than me, everyone’s aviation journey is different. It’s about being able to do the job correctly and more importantly safely. I fly with captains that are younger than me on a regular basis, it doesn’t phase me. Nobody cares how old you are, that’s something only you care about. Stop telling yourself that it’s too late and that you are too old. OLD TIME PILOT PROFESSIONALIf you are pushing 60 and still want to become a professional pilot after the mandatory 65 years of retirement age there are many other options beyond the 121 such as flying corporate, flying for a private owner or being a career instructor just to name a few options. If you are in your 20s 30s or 40s it is certainly not too late. If you want to make it to the majors or low cost carriers beyond the regionals, then I’d say have your ATP minimums by 50 – 55 years old. You will likely not make it to the majors. This will, in the current state of aviation world, give you a solid 5 years of flying for a regional since the retirement age is 65. If you want to become an airline pilot I would make sure that your are no older than 55 – 58 maybe even 60 to have the 1500 hours to start with a regional. Is it too late for you? Can you make it happen at your age? How will you make it happen? Is it too late for you to pursue a career as a professional pilot?įirst of, let’s see if it is too late for you to become a pilot. You are thinking about making that big career change into becoming a pilot in your 30, 40, 50s and maybe even in your 60s.
